Turning a Six Color Chart into a Two Color Chart

Now that you’re familiar with how to read a knitting chart, you may want to make some changes to the ones you run across.  In this case, I’m knitting Harriet’s Headband and I want to use 2 colors instead of 6.

As you can see, it comes out quite lovely!  It’s just a question of deciding which colors you want to appear where.

Let’s take this chart I made created for our example:

Six colors,

We can see from the key that there are 6 colors.  Beautiful!  But, if we only want to use 2,  what can we do?
We could get our own graph paper and copy it over.
Wr could get out a spreadsheet program and replicate it that way.
Or… there’s a really simple way to convert the design.  Print it in black and white!

Now you can follow this chart and make your own key for the two colors you want to use in your version.

If you want to change it up, it’s easy to see where to make adjustments.  For instance, I might make the center of the blue diamond (previously yellow) a white stitch instead of a red one.  It’s up to you.

Ta-da!
